I can't get sound to work on my desktop!

I can't get the sound to work on my desktop.
I had to wipe and reinstall XP due to a reboot loop that was occurring right after I logged in to my computer. My computer is an HP Pavilion m7480n, and I have tried the downloads at HP's site, but they haven't worked so far.
I know the sound is by a Realtek chip on the motherboard.
I could put up with no sound for the meantime, but it would mean that I couldn't record my music videos. That would annoy my fans.
