I think the question is perfectly legitimate; when a series is turned to film, people who haven't watched the series may have drastically conflicting opinions than those who did. I watched it, so, I asked.... I don't know if you and Jess watched the series, so, the question remains.
Well, not really; since I asked, I've been told by those who watched it that it is, indeed, very wicked. At the time, the person I went with said he'd rather see "Hot Fuzz," so, after only a little attempt to convince him to see "Transformers" instead, we went to see the import instead.

let's face it...the cartoon was mediocre at best...it was a commercial to sell some toys, for the most part. the movie takes what WORKS and runs with it...tongue-in-cheek humor and great action scenes....this is coming from myself, who watched the silly cartoon when it originally aired, and jess, who had never paid attention to transformers when she was a kid (she IS younger than me). The movie is more like a reinvention of the story, not some sort of homage or rewrite of the original plot, etc...seeing the original stuff doesn't matter...it's entertaining regardless. Ditch your preconceptions and check it out. You'll dig it.
I watched the movie today and it was fantastic...at first I thought it would suck bc of how it began, but that opinion soon changed and the entire movie kicked ass! It was funny and action packed! What more could a girl ask for?
I'm glad that it didn't follow the original cartoon... the one where Megatron changes into a stupid little pistol. The movie has its own story and that's the way it should be.
2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!
I watched the Transformers cartoon as a kid religiously. I loved it. AND I really really enjoyed the movie as well. Critics will always find flaws, however critics are not there to enjoy a movie, they are there to critique.
Oh and this topic should be in a Movie category...
But anyways, on this movie, meh. The robot battles were quite awesome, and stuff did in fact blow up. But there were too many holes in the movie, too many throw-away scenes, and no where near enough focus on the Transformers themselves, despite that fact that the movie was, in fact, a Transformers-related piece.
To sum up? As a Transformers movie, it was shit. As a movie standalone from the rest franchise, it was mediocre, essentially a soap opera with robots thrown in. As a straight up action movie it lags by messy editing and poor attempts at comedy. And it still lags far behind the 1986 movie.
Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today? Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection. Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!
