Motorola Doubles Shipments of WiMAX CPE and Dongles Again in Just Five Months; Receives Additional CPE Order from AXTEL for Its Growth in Mexico

Motorola device shipments now exceed two million; demand indicative of continued global momentum for WiMAX

LAS VEGAS, March 23 -- CTIA WIRELESS 2010 -- The Networks business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT), the worldwide leader in developing and deploying WiMAX 802.16e networks and consumer devices, today announced it has shipped more than two million WiMAX devices, including customer premises equipment (CPE) and dongles. This milestone occurred in February 2010 - just five months after Motorola shipped its one millionth device in September 2009.

"These are impressive numbers by any measure, particularly since we've exceeded the pace of WiMAX device shipments we achieved last year when Motorola doubled its WiMAX device shipments in just six months," said Bruce Brda, senior vice president, Motorola Networks. "The continued demand for WiMAX devices and infrastructure is a testament to the traction WiMAX is gaining as it delivers the personal media experiences people want, regardless of where they are."

Since hitting the two million device shipment milestone, Motorola has also received a significant order from AXTEL for additional CPE units. AXTEL contracted with Motorola in 2008 for a WiMAX network to deploy high-speed wireless broadband across Mexico and now offers fixed WiMAX service with plans to offer nomadic WiMAX service to its customers eventually.

"With Motorola's WiMAX network and devices, we've been able to give our customers unprecedented access to their data, friends, information and entertainment, whether at home or on the go," said Ivan Alonso, Innovation and Technology executive director, AXTEL.

Momentum for WiMAX continues to grow around the world. "At the end of 2009, WiMAX service providers were covering more than 621 million people," said Ron Resnick, president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum®. "Based on that estimate and the traction we're seeing in the market, the WiMAX Forum now forecasts that by 2011, there will be more than one billion people across the world within WiMAX coverage."

Motorola now has 40 WiMAX contracts with operators worldwide. The business cases and usage models are as varied as the geographies they serve. Some operators are using a wholesale model, others are bridging the digital divide and providing connectivity where there was none, and still others are bringing "on the go" connectivity to commuters on mass transit trains. As product innovation continues and the ecosystem of WiMAX-embedded devices continues to grow, operators are finding more possibilities and ways to monetize their investment to profitably launch WiMAX services.

Motorola is leading the industry with award-winning, end-to-end WiMAX solutions that address the full scope of operators' deployment needs, including a new tier of products for operators wishing to deploy WiMAX networks in less populated markets or in those previously deemed unprofitable to enter. Motorola's new WiMAX ASN 1000 gateway lowers the initial cost of deploying a smaller network or in low teledensity areas while the indoor desktop CPEi 090, allows operators to pursue new market segments.

The Motorola WiMAX solutions portfolio includes access, core, devices, network management and services. Motorola's best-in-class quality assurance processes, along with a track record of WiMAX commercial deployments worldwide, offer service providers the confidence that they are getting a high-quality, reliable solution. Motorola's CPE and device portfolio includes models in 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz across a selection of outdoor and indoor desktop CPEs with capabilities ranging from data-only to combinations that include voice, data, and WiFi as well as USB dongles for WiMAX on the go. Motorola's WiMAX CPEs and devices are also available for deployment on non-Motorola WiMAX networks worldwide.

Motorola Networks business delivers fully integrated and customizable media solutions enabling operators to offer personalized, rich media experiences to their subscribers. As a global wireless infrastructure leader, Motorola is committed to 4G with WiMAX and LTE solutions that provide a way for operators to profitably meet the ever-growing demand for mobile broadband today while giving 2G and 3G customers a future path as we continue to support their legacy networks. Motorola brings its services, fourth-generation orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) platform and 25 years of wireless data systems innovation, experience and expertise to bear as operators - wireline, wireless, cable and telco - seek to evolve their networks for the future.
